North Carolina (/ ˌ k ær ə ˈ l aɪ n ə / ()) is a state in the southeastern region of the United States.North Carolina is the 28th largest and 9th-most populous of the 50 United States.It is bordered by Virginia to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Georgia and South Carolina to the south, and Tennessee to the west. A large slave population maintained an agricultural economy based on tobacco and rice and on naval stores from the region’s extensive pine forests. South Carolina, part of the original Province of Carolina, was founded in 1663 when King Charles II gave the land to eight noble men known as the Lords Proprietors. Five voyages were made under the Raleigh charter of 1584 with the view of planting a permanent colony on the soil that became North Carolina; but the effort ended in failure, and almost a century passed when other hands carried into effect the noble ambition of Raleigh.
